Off the back of his Masters win and at the height of his game; former world number one golfer Jon Rahm defied tradition when he jumped ship from the historic PGA Tour to the team-based breakaway tournament LIV Golf. LIV sought out Further NY as design partner to help name and brand the team, in what transpired to become a uniquely personal brand. Looking to Jon's proud heritage and birthplace of the Basque Country as inspiration early in the process, we discovered that Julius Caesar's legendary thirteenth legion had campaigned there extensively. With Jon's team being the thirteenth to join LIV and roman numerals being the cornerstone of the original LIV brand; it was a serendipitous, full-circle moment. We had our name. Further fateful connections spurred us on when we realised the thirteenth legion's standard bore a lion. With Jon being a fervent supporter of Athletic Club a.k.a. 'Lehoiak/The Lions'. This historical and personal connection gave us the true visual heart of the identity. Taking cues from Basque iconography we crafted the lion's head to mimic the segment of a Lauburu - a symbol of good fortune – and concluded the identity with a modified type family inspired by traditional engraved lettering found across the region.
